The foundation of the Chinese Association for Public Opinion Research (CAPOR) of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Mass Communication and the first Chinese Public Opinion forum held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University on December 18 to 20 in 2015, more than 60 representatives of the College of Communication and Journalism attended this meeting. Professor Xie Yungeng, the vice president of the School of Media and Design, distinguished professor, the chief expert in the National Social Science Foundation Decision Consulting Service was elected as the chairman of CAPOR. Professor Tong Bing, the director of Media and Public Opinion Research Center of Fudan University, and Professor Yu Guoming, Cheung Kong scholar, distinguished professor in Renmin University of China, the committee member of News Communication of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the director of Public Opinion Institute at Renmin University of China were elected as the Honorary Chairman of CAPOR.

Professor Li Benqian, the President of School of Media and Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University held the foundation meeting of CAPOR. Professor Guo Xinli, the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in Shanghai Jiao Tong University was taken as the representative of all faculties, staffs and students in Shanghai Jiao Tong University welcomed every distinguished guest and leaders, and acknowledged every expert and scholar who have supported the foundation of this meeting. Professor Chen Changfeng, Chairman of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Mass Communication, Associate Chair of School of Journalism and Communication in Tsinghua University introduced the foundation background of CAPOR in the addressed speech and highly affirmed the important value of the foundation of CAPOR, and also considered that the committee foundation possessed the milestone meaning for the development history of Public Opinion in our country. CAPOR awarded “Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Public Opinion Research” for Professor Gan Xifen from Renmin University of China and Professor Zhao Qizheng, former Director of the State Council Information Office, the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China.

Professor Guo Xinli from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, deputy secretary of the Party in public opinion studies on the inaugural meeting of the committee made an important speech. He emphasized the meaning of the set up of CAPOR, and this authoritative and professional association promotes the development in public opinion research, academic exchanges, thematic research, professional training, research awards, and extensive cooperation, and it will greatly enhance the force of public opinion research.
    Former director of the State Council Information Office, Zhao Qizheng, Dean of the School of Journalism, Renmin University of China congratulated the establishment of CAPOR, he expressed that in the era of globalization, the influence of public opinion has become an important part of country soft power, and explained that public opinion research is a strategic task to show the world a real China. Zhao Qizheng affirmed the significance of the establishment of CAPOR, and he believes that the conduct of public opinion research is important channel that will help researchers learn public opinion more clearly to grasp the evolution of public opinion, predict the trend of public opinion more accurately, and improve China's environment more effectively.

Tong Bing, Honorary president of CAPOR, the media and public opinion survey research center of Fudan University, made a brilliant interpretation about the several key issues and potential development of public opinion research. Yu Guoming said, “In the transition of the Chinese society, it requires the responsibility and great wisdom of public opinion researchers, and we need to focus on the ‘where we do’, ‘do what’, and other strategic issues, and the direction is more important than speed”.

Distinguished professor Xie Yungeng, President of CAPOR, vice president of the School of Media and Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Expert of National Social Science Fund chief decision-making advisory pointed that the establishment of CAPOR combines the high quality resources in domestic public opinion research area, changes the chaos and scattered status of domestic public opinion research and education. For the domestic public opinion researchers, the association provides a platform for learning, exchange, and cooperation. After summing up the current situation and problems in the development of public opinion, Professor Xie Yungeng elaborated the responsibility and mission of CAPOR, which is, to integrate the power of public opinion research, promote the comprehensive development of public opinion education, improve public opinion research methods, establish the public opinion research standards, expand public opinion research application, and the scope of work and specific tasks were explained and illustrated.

 

President of the Asian Network for Public Opinion Research, Professor Zhao Shengqian (Sung Kyum Cho) sent congratulatory video message. He said: “Public Opinion relates to many areas, including politics, business, medicine, science, and so on. Association for Public Opinion Research needs people from all occupations to join in. The foundation of CAPOR will make the cooperation, information sharing, and research between each other more convenient.”

       At the First Chinese Public Opinion Forum, vice presidents of CAPOR, Professor Zhang Zhian, from the School of Communication and Design of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Shen Yang, from School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University, Professor Jiang Xiaoli, from the College of Literature and Journalism school of Sichuan University, Professor Chen Hong, Associate Chair of Communication School in East China Normal University, Professor Lin Aijun, form the School of Journalism and Communication, Jinan University, and Dong Mengjun, people's Daily deputy editor, deputy director of public opinion monitoring room, the People Online general manager, had roundtable dialogues with many other scholars and experts from top universities and national academies on under the themes of “Chinese International Communication and Global Public Opinion”, “Public Opinion Research in the Big Data Era”, and “Public Opinion Research and Think Tank Construction”, on the issues of network media, media convergence, media guidance, public opinion education, academic development, opinion theory system construction, and other related issues.
